In this tutorial we will look at building an image using masking to add detail to your design. For this project clear stamps have been used, this helps to see where you are placing an image.
The masks are stamped onto scrap or copy paper. Post-it notes are useful for mask work as they have a glue strip to attach the mask to your stamped image.
Mount your stamp onto your Rock-a-Block stamp mount (or other acrylic block). Ink using Versafine Ink, or the ink of your choice.
Stamp the image onto the mask paper.
For this coloring three concentric flower stamps have been used.
Stamp the two smaller flowers onto your masking paper.
Fussy cut the three flower masks.
Cut on the outside of the black stamped line so that the masks fully cover your images to be stamped over.
Ink the larger flower and stamp onto the watercolor card of your choice. This will form the basis for your design.
When stamping you may find it useful to place a fine foam mat under your project. This will help the stamp to sink into the card and for the ink to adhere. Here watercolor inking techniques will be used.
The ink required needs either to be water resistant and hold the image, or water soluble which can be blended into the image and provides a softer outline for your coloring.
Apply the largest mask over this flower. Attach the mask.
Stamp two of the smaller flowers over the larger stamped mask. Here you can see the overlapping of the stamps on the mask.
The effect you are trying to create is flowers growing naturally.
Add further masks and gradually begin to build up your image, using flower stamps and leaves.
Your image is stamped and ready to color. Trim the project to the size that you require.
Color the image with the medium of your choice. Spectrum Noir Sparkle pens have been used to color this design. I hope you have found this tutorial useful.
