The nights are drawing in and autumn is upon us. The focus is now on shades of orange and yellow and we know that the year is on the turn! This tutorial looks at coloring some fruits of the season. Here delicious, shiny apples have been colored and shaded using Spectrum Noir ColourBlend pencils.
Print or stamp the image of your choice onto Neenah Classic Crest Card, or your preferred card stock. If printing use a draft, grayscale print and leave your image to dry before coloring. This stops your printer ink bleeding into your pencil color.
For this coloring the outside of the apples are highlighted using the Cherry Red ColourBlend pencil.
Decide where the light would be hitting your apple to create definition and shape to your coloring. Here the light is coming in from the right and almost center of the image. Starting with you darker red shades move the color towards the center of you apples working from darker shades to lighter.
ColourBlend pencils used: Cherry Red, Poppy, Rose Red, Carmine, Flame Red.
The pencils are blended into each other and blend easily. This creates a smooth color gradient for your fruits.

Here a yellow highlighted area has been created with the Citrus pencil to define the center of the apples. This is blended into the red areas with Flame Red.
The black pencil further defines the outside of the apples and where deep shadow occurs. This would be into the dip where the stalk emerges from the front apple and on the bottom of the second apple in the dip where the blossom would have formed.
A selection of green pencils have been used to color the leaves. Darker shades being used in the middle of the leaves and areas in shadow, working out to lighter shades. Again the pencils are blended into and over each other to create a smooth color blend.
The pencils blend easily.
Spectrum Noir ColourBlend pencils used for the leaves: Lemongrass, Avocado, Pear Green, Shamrock and Amazon Green.
The Spectrum Noir Blender pen has been used to remove small dots of color from the center of both apples and create a focused highlight.
The apple blossom was colored with Sorbet and Antique Rose. The small blossom leaves with Amazon Green. The stem with Walnut.
I was not completely happy with the color gradient between the yellow center of the apples and the outer red areas. Some further blending was added with the Clementine between the red and yellow areas and it produces a pleasing color blend.
A very light application of Denim Blue creates some sky detail and highlights the apple image.
The completed coloring, mounted in autumnal shades.
I had colored another version of this image, printed onto kraft card. The same pencils were used to color the image with the addition of Oyster, Snow Peach and Vanilla to bring lighter/white shades to the Kraft card.
